Coffee & Cats in Turin (Torino)
It’s hard not to think of delicious pizza, creamy pasta, addicting ice-creams and of course, good coffee when you say Italy. Although my relationship with coffee has started only a while ago, I am always on the look out to find the most savoury coffee ever or just to the find that one black coffee I can enjoy. I have stumbled upon this little gem while I was just wandering around Turin last July on a moody kind of day – three powerful windy showers in a span of two hours is something. Being in Italy I had already had the mandatory morning cup of coffee, but as a cat lover I couldn’t pass this opportunity when I found this little cat cafe that looked as if it came out of a fairy-tale.
Situated a few walking minutes away from the Egyptian Museum on via Giovanni Amendola, the MiaGola Cafe has a lot to offer: from a handful of friendly cats reigning over the tables and piano, over to some of the creamiest cappuccinos that I have ever tasted, up to the cutest cakes and tarts (which even come in vegan versions), that you can savour while observing the shabby chic decor, which made the overall experience even better.
As I walked in I was completely taken by the laid back atmosphere in the cafe and the delicious smell coming from the roasted coffee beans. After taking a place at the big round table next to the piano and placing my order, I started looking for the resident cats. Most of them were hanging on the wall shelves or just lazying around on the cat tree playground, but some also came to you as soon as you sat down to take a sip of your drink.
The cakes did not only look amazing, but they were also incredibly tasty, almost treating myself with another piece of strawberry shortcake, after finishing a refreshing tiramisu. The music was also very soothing, a mix of saloon-like songs with jazzy versions of the latest singles.
To my surprise, it was opened until late evening (they close up at 9 PM), when it actually started getting crowded. On some evening they even set up various events and sales and people gather up joyously, bringing their kids, who have fun playing or petting the lovely kittens, which love the attention they’re getting while roaming around the coffee shop. If you’re in the neighbourhood or want to recharge your batteries, this is a great place to stop by. MiaGola Cafe is a great spot for travellers as well, since the waitresses can speak English and you can easily find a couple of outlets for your electronics.
